Lawrenceville School
Kirby Science Center
Lawrenceville, NJ
Education
1999
Aging classrooms and labs in Lawrenceville's science building had begun to impact the schools ability to provide the quality education for which it is renowned. The advantages of an interactive, lab-oriented curriculum and the desire to incorporate up-to-date technologies pointed to the need for a new structure.

Hillier assisted The Lawrenceville School in its site selection process for the new science building. The chosen site is campus hub opposite the library and adjacent to the math/computer science building. The 44,000 square feet building is divided equally among the biology, physics, and chemistry departments as well as an additional 6,000 square feet for the math department.

The F.M. Kirby Science Center frames one of three major green spaces on the campus. The entrance incorporates "science on display" within an atrium that ties the flagpole green through to the athletic stadium. The student and faculty lounges, academic departments, and shared teaching spaces are arranged along a wide, bright, cross-axial corridor that connects to the existing computer science facility.

The project's goals were to provide modern classroom and lab facilities, alleviate overcrowding, improve life-safety features, and integrate audio-visual and other educational technologies where appropriate.

While the building is technologically advanced and places Lawrenceville at the forefront of secondary-school science education, its appearance is mindful of the school's existing late 19th-century buildings.
