Olden House

Princeton, NJ
2014

The Olden House is a fully furnished short term apartment building with eighteen units, composed of a mix of one-bedroom and studio apartments, for visiting faculty members at Princeton University. The ideal location offers residents easy access to the University campus at one end of the street and the urban life of Nassau Street at the opposite end.

Switching between a cedar rain screen and whitewashed brick, the material palette also echoes the historic charm of the neighborhood. Olden House respects its residential neighbors by maintaining a low profile at only three stories high and a thoughtful play of materials to articulate its scale.

Continuing to take cues from its context, the building carries over the vertical proportion of the windows that populate the neighboring residential buildings to establish its own window pattern. In addition to respecting its context, the building takes measures to be sensitive to the environment by employing sustainable strategies like energy-efficient appliances and mechanical systems, lighting, and low-flowing plumbing fixtures that reduce water consumption.
